Sexual Intimacy – Does Cancer Mean Still Having Sex?

November 15, 2010 at 12:02 am Leave a comment

The sexual health of cancer patients is a quality of life issue that should be addressed by both the physician and/or social worker during and after cancer treatments. The details of when it is safe to participate in sex during chemotherapy treatment should be discussed with the patient’s physician. Psychosocial issues connected to sex such as body image, lack of sexual desire, and alternative options for engaging in intimacy with a partner, can be addressed by a licensed clinical social worker or psychologist. It is commonly known that many patients do not feel like having sex while in chemotherapy treatment because it may affect their libido. However, for those still engaging in sexual activity it is important to use appropriate protective devices. Like anyone else, cancer patients can be at risk for sexually transmitted diseases, which if acquired would greatly complicate their management. Also, although most women stop menstruating during treatment, they need to remember ovulation may not have ceased and therefore a pregnancy could occur.
